Many centuries ago, when the New Testament was being translated into English, the translators made an error. They decided on their own, without inspiration from God to translate the word "Hades" in Greek to the English word "hell". To show you what I mean, here is an excerpt from Wikipedia,
The mistranslation of this one word effectively corrupted the doctrines of God pertaining to a temporary spiritual abode of two spiritual places called "spirit prison" & "paradise". A place where the wicked and righteous go to await the resurrection. This important distinction within the scriptures likely caused Christendom (among other false influences), to believe there are only two places, being heaven and hell, the latter being with Satan. The failure to translate this one word effectively removed the truth of where Jesus Christ went immediately after his mortal death and this corruption effectively deadened the doctrine that Jesus taught the spirits in a spiritual prison.
With this mistranslation, Christendom failed to believe that after mortal death, the spirit goes to one of two places within this temporary abode, that of paradise or spirit prison. The parable of Lazarus and the Rich man explains the existence of Hades and it's division of two places, showing the unrighteous (rich man) ending up in spiritual prison to suffer some more, while the righteous (Lazarus) ended up in paradise to be at peace, both awaiting their resurrection.
This historic fact, which many Christians fail to see and even heed, is the proverbial wrench in their beliefs and personal doctrines. For example the Christian doctrine that once a person dies from mortality, they go asleep, becoming unaware of anything until the day of final judgement. This is in contrast to what the Greek word "Hades" means.
With the removal of the word Hades, mistranslating it into the English word of "Hell", allowed these doctrinal corruptions to occur, because that opened the door to frivolous philosophies of men that took hold and became one of many false Christian traditions.
When Joseph Smith said that we believe in the Bible as the word of God, so long as it is correctly translated, was a statement of faith supported by fact. The importance to interpret the Bible correctly is crucial to the proper development of faith and a needed protection from false and evil doctrines. Proper interpretation requires the Holy Ghost, without whom, there is no spiritual understanding of God's word.
The fact that Hades was mistranslated, means that a common Christian will falter in his/her faith to God, believing in false doctrines that, according to the Bible, makes God angry. This is because faith is to God and his truth, but once faith is placed into false doctrines created by men or Satan, faith is removed from God, the giver of life, and instead gives faith to death or dead things.
All this bears the witness that Christian traditions, usually called "Creeds" are corrupted and bear no authorship of God. The fact that this one corruption occurred is evidence that many other corruptions exist as well. For a person to claim that the Bible is the word of God, believing that it is "inerrant", is in error himself. The fact that many Christians blindly believe doctrines because they are "popular" among different denominations, have fallen to falsehoods and false worships.
Is not true that Jesus said those who abide in God the Father will worship him in spirit and in truth? Then how can false doctrines and bad interpretations (and translations) be truth?.
To follow false traditions and doctrines only leads to spiritual death and like the rich man parable, will end up in spiritual prison, because righteousness can only exist from God's truth, not from falsehoods of men.
